Dr Paws thrilled with Newcastle commercial fitout

 In Case Study, Commercial Construction

A visually striking and functional veterinary client has recently been completed, via a collaboration between Nulex Construction and Vault Design.

The client, Dr Paws, was looking to undertake a commercial fitout of a vacant commercial space in Kotara. The brief was to create a welcoming and professional environment for a modern veterinary practice focused on small animals.

Victoria Carroll, of Vault Design, says that from a design perspective, the separation of spaces into front of house/consulting and back-of house procedural areas was the key aspect, with control of access, sound and vision to be considered.

“The operation of a veterinary practice is not very different from a general practice focusing on humans, except that many of the veterinary patients must be accommodated on site for a period,” Victoria said. “

The areas used by clients/patients must feel welcoming and accommodate a diversity of patients, while also being a source of information and education. The design and finish in all spaces must support infection control, as well as the safety and comfort of both staff and patients.”

The construction of the new clinic included:

  • A lead lined X-Ray room
  • Operating theatre
  • Separate dog and cat rooms
  • Laboratory
  • Three consulting rooms
  • Staff room, including kitchen facilities
  • Large reception area

In the back office area of the site there is integrated storage for consumables, restricted medications and specialist equipment, which has been built in such a way to provide an efficient and safe workspace.

At Dr Paws a central workspace is used for many different functions, supported by dedicated spaces for keys tasks around the perimeter.

Large glazed panels throughout the back of house area have been used to enable visual checks of animal wards and theatre without entering these rooms, supporting operational efficiency and effective monitoring of patients.

“In conjunction with high levels of lighting and a restricted colour palette, the glazing also visually expands the space,” Victoria continued.

“I am delighted with the completed Dr Paws project – Nulex Construction have delivered a complex brief to a high standard. Their experience made a significant contribution to technical aspects of the project, in a tight timeframe,” Victoria concluded.

Dr Matt Buchanan-Pascall, of Dr Paws, said he was thrilled with the finished product and that the team at Nulex were fantastic to deal with throughout the entire planning and building process.

“Nulex were super responsive to updates and changes and only too happy to help with giving advice during the build,” Dr Buchanan-Pascall said.

“I am extremely happy with the end outcome – the clinic looks as amazing as I had always hoped and pictured it would. I can’t thank Lachlan, Justin, Jimmy and the entire team enough for making the build as smooth as possible and delivering on a brilliant product, on budget and on time.”
